Colors of the Signs
The main four colors used in safety signs
are red, yellow, green and blue.
Red signs: These signs are most often used in regards to fire and safety
symbols. They are used for pieces of fire equipment (such as fire
extinguishers), including those stored in cabinets, cupboards, lockers,
etc. These signs are shiny, so that they can catch a person's attention,
and are indicated with appropriate symbols. They usually contain arrows
pointed in the proper direction towards the equipment. Prohibitive signs
and symbols are also usually red, as are signs that depict actions,
movements or operations which are not allowed for reasons of safety,
security or privacy.
Yellow signs: These are generally warning signs that express cautionary
messages or dangers such as for hazardous conditions. These could
include high voltage areas, risks of explosions or risks of poison. The
signs are almost always triangular in shape and are very important to
ensure safety.
Green signs: These are life safety and fire safety symbols. The green
signs are generally placed so that they can be seen from any angle or
position inside a building or outdoors. The green signs also depict the
site of the First Aid stations, as well as informing people of the
location of emergency supplies and equipment.
Blue signs: These signs exhibit safety precautions that must be adhered
to in certain areas. These signs are often seen in a work place. They
may also be informational signs and symbols; they may give directions to
specific areas, rooms, services or activities. The signs will usually
contain an arrow pointed in the proper direction for a certain area or
service, etc.
Very important or crucial signs use luminous materials which are charged
by ambient light. This may be either natural or artificial light. If a
luminous sign is charged for a mere 15 to 20 minutes, adequate light
will be stored for up to eight hours in a dark room or area. This is
especially crucial during a blackout or other power outage. These
luminous safety signs are effective when important evacuation notices
must be given. The signs are designed in simple graphic terms so that
they can be easily understood by everyone, even those who may not speak
a certain language.
The luminous safety signs meet the OSHA requirements for safety. For
example a simple EXIT sign is luminous so that it can be easily seen in
case of emergency.
