Retro-reflective Sheeting on Signs

Highway signs are composed of many different types of retro-reflecting sheets.

The types of retro-reflective sheeting are classified by the ASTM (the organization that sets international standards). Theses types of retro-reflective sheeting are listed below.

Type I – Engineer Grade is a standard reflective sheeting material composed of little glass beads enclosed in a clear enzyme substance. This grade contains no distinctive patterns or characteristics, other than the fact that it reflects. Out of all sign materials, this one is probably the strongest and most durable and can withstand the roughest of conditions. It is known to have a service life of seven years.

Type II - This type of sheeting is known as the Super Engineer Grade. It is comparable to the Type I sheeting, but is composed of larger glass beads which adds to the level of reflectivity. Companies will insert small trademarks into the sheeting so that it can be easily identified. The price of this sheeting is nearly twice that of Type I, but its service life is longer, approximately ten years.

Type III - This type is also known as high intensity reflective sheeting and is often referred to as "encapsulated lens" sheeting. It is composed of two layers, including an outer clear pigmented layer and an inner layer which is reflective and contains glass beads. A lattice connects the two layers which gives the sheeting a "honeycomb" look. Each manufacture has its own distinctive lattice pattern. The cost of this sheeting is about twice that of Type I and it normally has a ten-year service life.

Type IV - This is a multi-layer sheeting composed of microscopic cube-corner reflectors rather than glass beads, which is called a "microprismatic" layer. The small square shapes are overlayed on a hexagonal lattice network type pattern, which creates a distinguishing feature for this type of sheeting. The cost of this type of sheeting is roughly the same as the Type III sheeting. It usually has a ten-year service life.
