Traffic Sign Purpose

The purpose of traffic signs is to warn, direct or regulate the flow of traffic, which includes not only motor vehicles, but bicycles, pedestrians, equestrians and other travelers as well. The signs are posted along and/or next to freeways, highways, roads, paths or any other routes.

Just like any traffic control method, all traffic signs must adhere to some requirements. There are five basic requirements for traffic signs. These requirements include: to command attention; to satisfy a need; to communicate a clear and straightforward meaning; to demand respect from travelers; to fulfill a need.

The shapes and colors of signs are important to ensure that they will capture the attention of the traveler. The signs must also be simple to understand by all travelers, including foreign travelers who may not be familiar with the language of the region in which they are traveling.

Traffic signs must be posted so that sufficient time is allotted for an adequate response. Thus, signs must be positioned according to the results of engineering studies and which are necessitated by facts. If signs are not warranted or are ineffective, they could divert the attention of the drivers from the more important traffic control devices. This could cause a disregard for all signs and could result in a waste of public agency and taxpayers' resources. Signs must be positioned so that they are essential for the safety and correct regulation of traffic in the area. If there are too many signs in any one area, people may take them for granted and signs in that area could prove to be ineffective.
